Whittingham has been a great player in his day, rampaging up and down the left flank for Villa and Cardiff, but he’s 33 now and having made only 14 starts for Rovers, he’s been on the fringe of their success. Injury has curtailed his season somewhat and although he returned recently, there must be lingering doubts over his ability to raise his game to Championship level again.
If Blackburn want to progress then they’ll need something far more effective than a 33-year old getting up and down the line. That’s no sleight on Whittingham’s longevity, just a doubt over his ability to do it on the bigger stage.
